12 Head of Year Interview Questions You're Likely to Be Asked

The 12 most commonly asked Head of Year interview questions in UK secondary schools, with honest guidance on what panels are really looking for and what to avoid saying.

1.

Why do you want to be a Head of Year?

What the panel is really asking: Do you understand what this job actually is?

Have you thought about it seriously, or do you just fancy a promotion?

This is almost always the opening question, and it's where a surprising number of candidates stumble.

The panel has heard every generic answer before.

They've heard "I'm passionate about pastoral care" more times than they can count.

What they want is specificity.

How to approach it: Talk about a moment that made you realise you wanted to lead pastorally.

Maybe it was a student you supported through a difficult period and the impact it had.

Maybe it was watching a Head of Year run an assembly that genuinely changed the tone of a room.

Maybe it was the frustration of seeing pastoral systems that didn't work and knowing you could build something better.

Then connect it to this school specifically.

Reference something from the school's website, their Ofsted report, or your visit.

Show you've done your research and that you're not just applying for any HOY post — you're applying for this one.

What not to say: Don't frame it as a stepping stone.

Even if your longer term ambition is SLT, the panel needs to feel that you genuinely want the Head of Year role for what it is, not for what it leads to.

Also avoid vague generalisations about "caring about students" without backing them up with concrete examples.
